There is a woman who started “Carols in the Desert” about 5 years ago (I think) and it has grown from 40 people to over 400 people. It is so cool. It was our first excursion out into the desert. We followed the great directions with our GPS and got out to a spot of endless sand. There were masses of people everywhere. The kids had a blast playing on the sand dunes and we brought along a picnic dinner. Several people brought BBQ’s and there were some BBQ’s available for people who wanted to cook there.
After everyone enjoyed playing outside and visiting for awhile, the sun eventually went down. There were candles provided and someone playing piano and a guitar while a hot cocoa stand dished out yummy, sugary-chocolate drinks for all. We sang carols (some American ones I knew and some other ones I didn’t). They had passed out sheets earlier so we all at least had the words.
The caroling itself was hard to hear unless you were really, really, really close to the singing. But being out in the desert, under the stars with tons of people in the Christmas spirit was pretty cool.
